“And Jesus turned and saw them following, and said to them, “What do you seek?” They said to Him, “Rabbi (which translated means Teacher), where are You staying?” (John 1:38, NASB)
He turned. And following him were men intrigued. John said he was the Lamb of God. And so, believing, they followed. They wanted more…
What do you seek?
And they replied… “Where are you staying?”
Where are you staying? Because we want more of you. We want to be with you, wherever you go. Wherever you reside… we want to be there, too. Safe with you. We want to dwell with you and learn from you, see you in action… Our hearts are ravenous, and are mouths are so very dry. We hunger and thirst for your righteousness, dear Christ, and we are waiting to be filled. We are ready to learn more of your beauty, of your love, of what you are here to do. …So, where are you staying?
What do you seek? To be with you. To bring you glory. To see and share your greatness. To magnify you, Lord!
Jesus’ asking what we seek is such a powerful question. It’s an examination, of sorts, that lays open our very hearts!
What do you really seek… Do you seek it above all else or at all costs? Satisfaction? Happiness? Health? Fame? Personal glorification? Attention? Understanding? Sympathy? Respect? Control? An easier life? Relief? Any of these things sought apart from God or above God are just empty, hollow cravings. They are hungers that go on and on, and remain insatiable.
Oftentimes, we chase these shadowy desires momentarily, until we realize that these things can never fill us. In and of themselves, they never completely satisfy. Instead, sometimes without even realizing it, and at other times knowing for sure, we are actually searching for what always satisfies… Him.
So, what do you seek? The question itself is like a great magnifying glass moving from what we are, to what He is. Magnifying our humanness, our flesh, our weakness, our intentions, then revealing them, and now zooming in closer… to His forgiveness, His perfection, His holiness, and His grace.
What do you seek?
- Salvation? Following Jesus as Lord is the answer.
“If you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.” (Rom 10:9 HCSB)
- Wisdom? Following Jesus is the answer.
“Because they are united in love, I pray that their hearts may be encouraged by all the riches that come from a complete understanding of the full knowledge of the Messiah, who is the mystery of God. In him are stored all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.” (Col 2:2,3, ISV)
- Truth? Following Jesus is the answer.
“Yeshua said to him, “I AM THE LIVING GOD, The Way and The Truth and The Life; no man comes to my Father but by me alone.” (John 14;6, Aramaic Bible in Plain English)
- Hope? Yet again, following Jesus is the answer.
“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead” (1 Pet 1:3, NIV)
- Peace? Rest? Strength? Yes, Jesus is the answer.
“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.” (John 14:27, ESV)
“Come to Me, all of you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” (Matt 11:28, HCSB)
“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” (Phil 4:13, KJV, 2000)
I think Jesus looks into all our hearts and asks us, “What do you seek?” And when He places His loving, revealing, holy magnifying glass over our hearts, we should be ready.
Prayer: Look into me, Oh Lord, and see past my unrighteousness… to your Son, Jesus, who dwells within this body called “temple of the Holy Ghost” and cleanses me from all sin… Please wash me whiter than snow.
See Him. And let Him be magnified!
…In my Bible, beside this verse, I wrote: “What do you really seek, Ali?” I pray that with His help, my answer will always be…”Where are You staying, Lord? That’s where I seek to be!”
